Grief Recovery that Works
WHAT IS GRIEF?
Grief is the normal and natural reaction to significant emotional loss of any kind. While we can never compare losses, any list would include death and divorce as obvious painful losses.
Some of the 40 other types of losses can include loss of a child, long term/critical illness, job loss, health, and financial issues, moving, retirement, pet loss, marriage, empty nest, end of addictions, and any unmet hopes, dreams, and expectations.
The range of emotions associated with grief varies. Grief is individual and unique. As every relationship is unique, so are the feelings and thoughts each person will have about the relationship that has been altered by the loss.
Incomplete recovery from grief can have a lifelong negative impact on our capacity for happiness. Plus, most of the information passed on within our society about dealing with grief is not normal, not natural, or helpful. Grief is the emotional response to loss, but, most of the information we have learned about dealing with grief is intellectual. Grief is NOT intellectual, it is not our brains that are broken...it is our hearts that are broken.
The majority of incorrect ideas about dealing with loss can be summed up in six myths:
The Six Myths of Grief
• Don’t Feel Bad
• Replace the Loss
• Grieve Alone
• Time Heals All Wounds
• Keep Busy
• Be Strong for Others
Just looking at the myth “time heals” creates the idea that a person just has to wait and they will feel better. There are people who have waited 10, 20, 30, and 40 years, and still did not feel better. They would tell you that not only had time not healed them, but, that it had compounded the pain.
Recovery from loss is accomplished by discovering and completing all of the undelivered communications that accrue in relationships.
Completion of pain caused by loss is what allows us to “let go” and “move forward". It is almost impossible to move forward without first taking a series of actions that lead to completion.
